Freelancing and consulting has been a part of my life since the 1980s. In the 90s, as our current technology “geared up,” I found myself working more and more in the arena of freelancer, as few companies had invested in the equipment of new media. The job shops in Denver, Colorado were a mecca of work for any consultant who had a handle on the new tech.
In this section of my Blog, I will be providing information for those out there who are new to freelancing as well as to those who’ve been working solo for a long time. My background includes being in the “vanguard” of teachers in distance learning, where I not only taught these topics, but created the initial online courses. I guess if we need to come up with an encapsulated one-liner that will define freelancing, it would be: “Take care of your network and it will take care of you.”
As in anything online in the area of marketing, the power is “in the list.” For marketing, that would be the list of followers who’ve come to trust any given person for providing the information that helps them to succeed. For the freelancer, that equivalent list is the group of people who’ve come to you for services and are highly satisfied with your work. These people are your jobs of the future, both directly and indirectly through word of mouth.
As a freelancer, attending to and working with your growing network of clients is essential, and should be the core of all other works. Networking on a daily basis is necessary, and in this state of global economy today, with many people looking to take business endeavors online, networking will help you grow your own business while helping others.
No matter what your expertise is, the work is there. In fact, in these tough 2008-going-into-2009 times, what I am observing is that the list of opportunities has skyrocketed, worldwide. The time for the small entrepreneur has arrived.
Please bookmark this category in my blog. I will be exploring the field of freelance in depth and my discoveries will be things you can add to your arsenal of business tips and techniques!
